{"id":1519,"date":"2015-12-05T20:23:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-06T04:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/?p=1519"},"modified":"2016-03-13T20:52:02","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T03:52:02","slug":"aftershock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/2015\/12\/aftershock\/","title":{"rendered":"Aftershock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">The day after the quake was filled with uncertainty.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Information from EBC and C1 came our way via radio, and we listened intently.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was still impossible to grasp what had happened below, but clearly things were bad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Injured climbers in EBC who had survived the night needed helivac to Pheriche or Kathmandu, and lots of preparation was going on getting things ready for these flights.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had no hard numbers, and certainly no true sense of the horrible night that our friends had endured at EBC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just as we had discussed the prior evening, the best thing for us to do was to sit tight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had planned on two nights at C2 in the first place, so we were well-supplied, healthy, and in no rush to descend.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, we had no way of knowing whether the route below was passable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The word for the day was going to be \u201cpatience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Morning clouds burned off to reveal a dazzling, blinding world of pure blue sky above and fresh powder snow below our feet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lhotse looked very different cloaked in white: more beautiful, clean, and benign than it had from C1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our yellow tents stood out in sharp contrast to the pure snow, the jet black basalt of Everest\u2019s West Ridge, and the intense blue of the hanging glaciers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We pulled folding chairs out of the dining tent and lined them up on the snow, facing down the valley, and took in the incredible views.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was little to do but sit, wait, and watch the cwm and the modest activity at C2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We were at the top of the established route, but looking up at Lhotse we could see where C3 was supposed to be.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The face is very steep, and very austere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, we all felt the same way: <i>We can do this<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ux121WPMsr4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1533\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1533\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMGP4128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1533\" src=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMGP4128-530x800.jpg\" alt=\"IMG C2 and Lhotse above, just before the sun crests and floods the cwm with light. (Photo: Blake Penson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once our teammate was safely on his way, everyone smiled and attempted to relax.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, anxiety and confusion were undercurrents that could not be ignored.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One rumor that I found particularly disconcerting: two\u00a0Sherpas from another expedition who were trying to reestablish the route to C1 developed\u00a0HAPE on the way down, leaving them trapped above an impassable crevasse, calling for helivac.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, word that they had been longlined down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To this day I have no idea whether this story is true, but I doubt it. Mountaineering is always full of rumors, incomplete stories, or inaccurate information, and this situation was no different.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, we had the benefit of team leadership that was working hard on our behalf, and we knew that eventually all would be clarified. \u00a0We could always trust information coming from IMG&#8230; everything else was suspect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The biggest question: <em>How will\u00a0we get down?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>The quake had probably caused the seracs to shift in in the icefall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Building a safe route up had taken the icefall doctors weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would this process need to be repeated?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of our amazing guides, Justin, joined two other guides from other teams at C1 and together they tried to make their way down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 All of this was totally out of sight from C2, so\u00a0w<\/span>e waited and waited for news of their progress.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At some point in the early afternoon we felt an aftershock: Just a brief jot and shake, but enough to convince everyone that reestablishing the route through the icefall would not be safe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We knew Justin was in there, and worried about him for a moment, until his safety was confirmed via radio. \u00a0It sure sounded like walking down was out of the questions, at least for now.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1444\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC01220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1444\" src=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC01220-800x532.jpg\" alt=\"Blake and my tent gathers rays. (Photo: Blake Penson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">After lunch we pulled our thin sleeping mats out of our tents and laid in the dining tent, trying to rest and buoy each others spirits.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the bare stone floor was incredibly cold, and when cloud cover returned the dining tent became too cold for comfort, so we retreated to our own tents and sleeping bags.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hard to describe what those hours were like\u2026 Physically we were fine, though a bit tired while living at 21,300 feet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, mentally, we were shrouded in questions and doubts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><em>How will we descend?<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, most importantly\u2026 <em>Will we return?<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My teammates, being smarter and more insightful than I by far, seemed to understand that this was the end.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I simply could not believe that the expedition was over. \u00a0I kept assessing our situation in my mind and out loud.\u00a0<i> I am fine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are fine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The upper mountain is fine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This will be fine.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1539\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/C2XTent4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1539\" src=\"https:\/\/pottinger.net\/osm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/C2XTent4-800x451.jpg\" alt=\"The view from our tent that afternoon.
